To be interested in Satie one must be disinterested to begin with, accept that a sound is a sound and a man is a man, give up illusions about ideas of order, expressions of sentiment, and all the rest of our inherited aesthetic claptrap. It is not a question of Satie's relevance. He's indispensable.

I've always loved Satie: for his lightness and depth, for his extravagance made of genuine gestures and thoughts, for his seriousness always expressed with humor, for his provocations never closed in themselves. It's not easy being like this, it risks being too often misunderstood. But let's come to my last experience: Vexations. This is a short theme on bass, interspersed with two attunements at all obvious. Satie makes it clear:
" this motif has to be played for oneself 840 times in a row. It must be well prepared beforehand, and in total silence, with a series of immobilities."
